jonas

Description: David will do a quick drawing in either charcoal or paint to establish position, proportion and general design and then a move to cover the surface with relative color relationships, and to complete as much as he is able in the allotted time.

He will rest about every 20 minutes and take questions at that time.

David Jonas, the artist:

David Jonas, a native of Los Angeles, attended the Art Center School and the Jepson ArtInstitute, after which he began a successful carrer in New York City for about ten years. At about that time there he experienced a life change and returned to Los Angeles where he illustrated children’s books. Following that he was employed by Walt Disney Studio for another ten years in both animation and live action films. He decided to broaden his horizons and free-lanced as a story board and conceptual artist throughout the motion picture industry for fifteenyears in the major film companies, including four more years for Disney animation. During that times he extended his studies in landscape and figurative painting through various classes and workshops.

In 1989 he retired from the film industry and began painting full time while studying and teaching at the California Art Institute in Thousand Oaks, CA. Late in 1999 David moved with his wife Susan to Los Osos, where he has continued painting on the Central Coast.

His work is in many private collections, and as a Signature member of the California Art Club since 1993, he has participated and juried in their Gold Medal exhibitions. He has taken part in several painting festivals at the mission in San Juan Capistrano, which purchased one of his paintings for its permanent collection in its museum. His work has been included in a number of museum shows such as the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, the

Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, the Frederick Weisman Museum in Malibu and the Phippen Mueum in Prescott, AZ. He was last represented by the Mayr Gallery during its tenure in San Luis obispo, and is now a member of the Morro Bay Art Association.

Description: Julia will show us how she packs to go out into the field, sets up, and does a plein air painting in oil. Julia will donate an original oil painting as a raffle prize.

Julia has painted in many plein air festivals including the Plein Air Festival at the San Luis Obispo Art Center.

Julia grew up in Kentucky, over looking the Ohio River across from Cincinnati. She started art classes early at Baker-Hunt Academy and went on to the Rhode Island School of Design.  Julia furthered her studies at the University of Cincinnati majoring in Industrial Design.

mission

Interrupting her schooling, Julia married and moved to Colorado.  Her love of the West grew with her sojourn in the mountains and ghost towns around Colorado Springs. Eventually settling in the SF Bay area she continued her art studies and graduated with honors from San Jose State University with a BA in Design/Illustration. There she studied watercolor with John O'Beck and classical oil painting technique with Raymond Brose.

Julia had a full career in retail store design and as an art director for packaging and sales promotion in San Francisco, allowing her to travel throughout Europe and Asia. Now devoting herself to painting full time, she regularly is invited to participate in the some of the most prestigious plein air events and shows in California, Colorado and Arizona.

Julia works in plein air using oils to catch the quickly changing light and shadows of the Bay Area hills where she lives. She paints the landscapes of Northern California and the rural country side of the central coast, the colors and patterns are a her source of inspiration.

May 12, 2008 Jason Mayr "Demo in Oil", local painter and instructor
  something

Demonstration: Jason Mayr will be the featured demonstrator this month for the Morro Bay Art Association. Color will be his mainfocus.....he'll be talking about color temperature (warm & cool), how to get good rich color, making beautiful grays and how to make color sing. He'll be painting a still life and always had great information to share.

Bio--Jason Mayr grew up in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas where he was a very intense student in school. At the age of fourteen he developed a deep interest in eastern philosophies. After high school he pursued his study of eastern philosophies in communes and monasteries as well as studying western philosophy at the University of Texas at Arlington.

While in college he had the opportunity to view a private collection of impressionistic paintings at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. It was there that his interest in

art began in earnst. He was awe inspired by the way that the artists were able to create a scene and a mood simply with the juxtaposition of paint.

Shortly thereafter Jason moved to Los Angeles, California where he began to study at the Art Center College of Design and the Art Academy of Los Angeles. But the instruction that he had been searching for was not found until he began studying under master painter Joseph Mendez. Regardless of subject matter, Jason tries to express an emotion rather than tell a story with his paintings. He uses the tools of the painter, color, value, shape and design to accomplish this. He often looks to his heroes, the Russian Impressionists, for inspiration.

Currently, Jason resides in San Luis Obispo, California with his wife Cindy and their German Shepherd Cora, where his time is divided between painting on location and in the studio. For 4 years straight (2003-2006) he has been voted one of the Best Local Artists, quickly establishing his reputation in San Luis Obispo County. Now he is building a national reputation, participating in shows and paint outs across the country. Jason is a member of The Oil Painters of America, The American Impressionist Society and The California Art Club. He has hopes of becoming one of America's preeminent painters, so keep your eyes on him.
