MBAA Shows Space Scapes

As part of its Childrens’ Art Program, the Morro Bay Art Association is now showing “Space Scapes”, the work of Baywood Elementary School’s (Los Osos) third graders. This is part of the SLO Unified School District’s Visual & Performing Arts Program, and is taught by the “artist in residence” Stephanie Arehart. The project is a two part lesson (90 minutes), that teaches the elements of space. The students learn to see depth and perspective by overlapping elements and placing larger subjects in the foreground and smaller in the background, in this case planets in our solar system. The lesson also teaches watercolor techniques of mixing colors, wet on wet, cellophane placement and the effect of rubbing alcohol on the painting. The project works in tandem with the students current lessons on the Solar System, taught by Mrs Comeau.

The “Artist in Residence” program is currently funded by district “special funds”, which are not certain for next year.

The show runs through the middle of March at the MBAA Gallery, 835 Main St., Morro Bay, 772-2504.
